Scariest escalators in Singapore

The boys visited the optometrist at the new shopping centre 313 today. After that, we walked around looking for somewhere to eat. I decided to check out Orchard Central, which I have never been to. There was an escalator right in front of the building, on the exterior of the building, much like what Funan has.

We took a couple of flights of escalators to reach the 7th floor and this is the view we got from there.

However, the journey up here was a pretty harrowing one. I warned Sean not to look down and I quickly grabbed on to his hands, partly for myself. I didn't realise the escalator was so steep and tall. This is the escalator that led us to the 7th floor.

We wanted to check out what was higher up, but when we saw the next escalator which led to the 11th floor, we all chickened out! No way was any one of us getting on this. Eeeks...

The escalators at ION are much the same. I'm ok if they're steep but not if they move really fast which some of the escalators in Singapore seem to do. Turbo speed escalators. FTW!

(Look how many comments I'm leaving today...obviously procrastinating. haaa)

Aha, another similarity. That escalator really freaked me out.
D was really mischievious and kept saying "Mummy come and see the view" while dragging me to the side. He knows I am scared of heights. I was trying desperately to stay on the inside of the escalator and not look anywhere.

Aiyo, didn't know that you were at 313 today, if not I also bring J for her overdue check up. :-P

I haven't been to this escalator, was in Central but took the escalator in the building, I was looking for the rock climbing sch. The escalator does look scary, I think I will chicken out too.

Hsien: Nah-uh, I don't think ION's escalators are as hair-raising as these ones. This goes up 4 storeys at a go, and the worst part of it is it is on the outside of the building, too open and exposed. And unlike thrill-rides at theme-parks, there's no seat-belt/harness to make us feel less vulnerable. Btw, you're talking to Queen of Procrastinating, so I definitely understand, glad you completed your HUGO article, leaving comments everywhere obviously helped :)

Elan: Wahhhh, D is so brave. I'm usually not so chicken, and I've been on pretty steep and fast-moving escalators in Moscow's metro stations, and I think London's Piccadilly Station too. But this one really takes the cake.

Chris: I was asking Shawn about Jade. I never bothered to go to Central before. I think it's benefitting from 313's opening. It's actually a really big shopping complex, goes up many floors. Oh, I told Shawn I prefer their old shop in Park Mall, more spacious.

Eh..I am less local than I know...
I don't know 313, Orchard Central nor Ion yet...so I have no idea what you ladies are talking about.. LOL

Now I wonder if I am the one staying overseas. :P

Okay, let me educate you on Singapore's new shopping mall scene. ION is this big, spanking, mall at the junction of Scotts/Orchard, ie, opposite Tangs, and next to Wisma Atria. 313 is the newest, right atop Somerset MRT. Orchard Central is next to 313, opposite Centrepoint, where a public carpark used to be. Go forth and window-shop...

I have tried the one at Ion and that freaked me out quite a bit. Now you're saying this is even worse! How many new shopping malls are there now? They seem to be everywhere.

Lilian said...

They really are everywhere...I can't really keep track.

I've seen those escalators only from the exterior and that looks scary enough! Your photos have convinced me that I don't wanna try them, thank you :) I wonder how the management will deal with possible "incidents" on these escalators though... must be a PR nightmare.

I shudder to think of any possible 'incidents'...pray nothing ever happens but this just seems like an accident waiting to happen.

I wish I can say Pulau Ubin... LOL

Everytime I go back, there's a new mall! I have been to Ion (with Chris lah) and Orchard Central. Will chk out 313 the next trip back. ;)

Well, for many years, Ngee Ann City was the newest mall. I remember thinking that KL had so many new malls but there was nothing new in Singapore. Then these couple of years, one after another pops up, as if making up for lost time!
