A dog eat dog kids' world

This weekend, we watched a BBC documentary (title: Please Vote for Me) about kids in a Chinese school electing their class monitor. Both Brian and Sean were totally engrossed, maybe because they hardly get to watch shows that have kids who look like them. This show was an eye-opener, to see children this young (8-years old) use underhanded ways (and encouraged by their parents too) to win votes. After watching this, Eddie and I feel our boys are really too sheltered, they'll be eaten alive in no time if left to survive out there today! Watch out for the chubby boy Cheng Cheng, if he ever becomes leader of China one day, the rest of the world is doomed :)

LIlian, this video is scary. I've been thinking about homeschooling RK for the long term, but this makes me want to put him in a school. In China!

The trouble is, while the video champions honesty, I can totally see characters like Cheng Cheng making it in the big leagues while people like Luo Lei are just left biting the dust. Nasty stuff, politics! Tks for the video!

Yes, Hsien & I both thought Cheng2 should have won. He was no angel but definitely tonnes smarter. He'll probably end up being a dynamite businessman or politician while Luo Lei will end up working for him!

Hey, I caught this on TV over the weekend! I think the parents are the ones that catapult their kid's behaviour. China, with their one child policy makes it worse. Parents are doing all they could to make sure their only kid stays on top.

I don't know if Luo Lei will end up too far behind if at all. He's got a leg off with more affluent parents who are willing to use bribery to win. As long as he continues to be one of the haves instead of the have-nots, Luo Lei will probably do fine.

The one who I think needs to buck up is the girl, Xuxiao Fei. (I couldn't even remember her name. Had to look it up.) If she's going to survive out there with people like Cheng Cheng and Luo Lei around, she will have to get tough!

Hsien - you're probably right, for now. LL had better pick up this ability to grease, or he ain't gonna get nowhere when he's older! CC's though, seems innate. Just loved it when he asked the interviewer to ask that girl again if she would vote for him when he gets out of earshot.

Oh boy... think the People are truly happily "satisfied" during an election campaign in the name of democracy. What with the goodies, even if they were just momentarily!?!

On CC: Gee, isn't it a great way to train up self-confidence when one rehearses his speech in his underwear???!! That's why he wasn't defeated when his shortcomings were topics of a debate!
